Two firefighters died from injuries sustained while fighting a June 2, 2011, fire in a multi-story, single-family dwelling in San Francisco. After failure of windows in the basement, where the fire began, an adjoining stairway became a “chimney for hot gases” that poured onto the first floor. Coupled Fire-Evacuation simulation using the railEXODUS software V2.2 coupled to the SMARTFIRE CFD fire simulation software. In this scenario we are modelling the evacuation from an Open Wide Gangway (OWG) train in a tunnel subject to an accidental luggage fire. The OWG configuration means that there is no compartmentation between cars and so the fire effluent can spread between cars. In this scenario the train is considered to be fully loaded with 715 passengers. The full population load corresponds to a density of approximate 5 persons/m2, which is the observed maximum standing capacity for rolling stock on LUL. Update on the software I was developing for a computer graphics project. Mouse allows to modify air velocity and add fire. Uses MacCormack scheme with buoyancy and vorticity confinement. Added smoke / heat shimmering. The lag in the video is from the capture software, the simulation runs at 60 fps.
