Two firefighters died from injuries sustained while fighting a June 2, 2011, fire in a multi-story, single-family dwelling in San Francisco. NIST used its Fire Dynamics Simulator and visualization software to investigate the circumstances and fire behavior that led to untenable conditions on the first floor, where the downed firefighters were found. After failure of windows in the basement, where the fire began, an adjoining stairway became a “chimney for hot gases” that poured onto the first floor. Update on the software I was developing for a computer graphics project. Mouse allows to modify air velocity and add fire. Uses MacCormack scheme with buoyancy and vorticity confinement. Added smoke / heat shimmering. The lag in the video is from the capture software, the simulation runs at 60 fps.

The train is a four-car conventional train and the tunnel represented within the simulation is a 120 m portion of the tunnel. The fire is intended to represent an accidental fire starting in luggage. Depicted in this animation is the 100C temperature iso-surface. The entire computational domain consists of 602,805 cells. The mesh is unstructured resulting in an accurate representation of the curved tunnel roof.
