Two firefighters died from injuries sustained while fighting a June 2, 2011, fire in a multi-story, single-family dwelling in San Francisco. NIST used its Fire Dynamics Simulator and visualization software to investigate the circumstances and fire behavior that led to untenable conditions on the first floor, where the downed firefighters were found. After failure of windows in the basement, where the fire began, an adjoining stairway became a “chimney for hot gases” that poured onto the first floor. This fire simulation is actually 30 RGB LEDs (WS2812B) and an Arduino, running a simulation software called "Fire2012" that I wrote -- you guessed it -- in 2012. The LEDs are inside a white 'cable organizer' tube which helps diffuse the light.

This presentation describes FSEG research undertaken to investigate the fire and evacuation in aircraft. The paper was presented at the Human Behaviour in Fire Conference held in the UK in Sept 2012 by Prof Ed Galea. In this presentation the SMARTFIRE software is used to simulate the fire that engulfed the Boeing 737 aircraft at Manchester airport in 1985. This is then coupled to the airEXODUS aircraft evacuation simulation software to predict the impact on the evacuating passengers.
